Job Hunting? Here’s How to Navigate That Awkward Conversation
Jan 16, 2025Navigating the job market while you’re still employed? It’s a tricky situation, especially when that tough question comes up:
“Should I tell my manager that I’m looking for a new job?”
It’s one of those career dilemmas that doesn’t have an easy answer, but here’s how I’d approach it based on my experience:
When You Should Share
If you have a supportive and transparent relationship with your manager, honesty can work in your favour. Some companies even encourage internal career moves, and you might be surprised how much support you get.
Example: One of my clients shared their plans with their manager and ended up receiving mentorship that helped them secure their dream role.
When to Keep Quiet
If your workplace isn’t supportive of career moves or if you’re unsure of your manager’s reaction, it’s safer to keep your plans private. You can still explore opportunities outside without jeopardising your current position.
How to Handle Either Scenario
- Stay Professional: Keep delivering great work until you're ready to move on.
- Network Strategically: Build connections outside of your organisation to open new doors.
- Know Your Rights: Job hunting is your personal decision. You don’t owe explanations until you’re ready to make the move.
At the end of the day, your career decisions should align with your long-term goals—not just what feels easiest in the moment.
What’s your take on this? Would you tell your manager? Drop a comment or hit “Reply”—I’d love to help you navigate this situation.
To your success,
